Weekend in Redmire, North Yorkshire

For two years now we have been lucky enough to be gifted a voucher for Christmas to stay at the Bolton Arms in the village of Redmire (http://www.boltonarmsredmire.co.uk/).  It has meant that we have been able to enjoy a quiet country break, but most importantly we have been able to take Lucy (our Fur Baby) with us (blog post: Meet my Lucy).

The B&B has three "dog friendly" rooms within a converted outbuilding and for a single charge of £5 your dog can enjoy a holiday with you. I'd recommend you ask not to stay in room 3 if your chest is at all aggravated by damp. Being an old building there is a damp issue in this room which meant we had to sleep with the window open and have the dehumidifier running all night. This meant our first night was one of little sleep, but by the second night we were so zonked after all the great Yorkshire fresh air and good food we slept like a couple of proverbial logs!

Bar area (dog friendly!)

It really is a fabulous country pub with a great restaurant and B&B attached. The location is also good for country hikes and small towns, should you wish to connect with civilisation again - all within easy driving distance. The owners and staff are all lovely, but the outright highlight for us has to be the food. We have never experienced a bad meal here. The portions are generous and the prices are very reasonable. I recommend booking in advance as it is a very popular dining destination for locals and holiday makers alike.

We ate in the bar area rather than the restaurant - same menu and lovely atmosphere

One of the nearby points of interest is Asgarth Falls which famously years ago featured in the film Robin Hood Prince of Thieves (starring Kevin Costner and Alan Rickman). You can walk there using public footpaths through Castle Bolton and across fields being observed by many curious sheep. I'd say it takes about 4 hours for a round trip (at a novices walking pace plus bouncy springer on the lead)! Or you could drive there in about 20 minutes. There is ample parking there and a national trust visitor centre/cafe.

Asgarth Falls

We also drove to a town called Richmond (less than an hour away by car). We found a lovely riverside walk for the dog that took us all the way into the town centre (via some extremely steep streets as an FYI) and if it had not been raining at that time we would have enjoyed a picturesque riverside picnic (courtsey of "Greggs" the Bakers). We did however enjoy our car picnic (many childhood memories ensued).

Soggy Doggy!

I hope you enjoyed hearing about our little weekend away to the Yorkshire Dales. It has been great to get away as a little family unit and just unwind with lots of fresh air and good eating.

Have you ever been to the Dales? Where would you recommend we try next?
